A brief history of the Shire Reaves of Shrewsbury

1996 was the first year for the Shrewsbury Renaissance Faire. Site safety was a scratched together affair. Dan Kay had volunteered to work, but became the main security person as various appointed people in charge began falling out. At the end of that weekend, Dan was asked to be the Director of Site Safety, and foolishly accepted.

In 1997 the name “Shire Reaves” was chosen for the group, and it is set up as a Living History Guild within the Shrewsbury Renaissance Faire. The search for personnel to fill the ranks of the guild began slowly, as many people wanted to play Faire, but did not want to work for the privilege. This proved advantageous, as it provided the guild from the outset with people who were serious about their duties and were willing to work in shifts during the 5-6 days of set up, Faire and tear down.

Since 1997, the guild has continued to grow in slow, steady increments, attracting people who not only are interested in site safety, but also in the living history aspect of the guild.
